I took the subway from Shenzhen down across the border to  Hong Kong with a Latvian guy named Rudolph. He called himself James most days to maintain the appearance of a native English speaker at his schools but nothing could really hide his noticeably thick accent simply because the over enunciated rolls he used with his “R’s”.

The Dirt Road (Cambodia)

There was one long dirt road in Siem Reap that truly opened my  eyes to the grim reality of the outside world that, until then, I had just looked at as a stamp in my passport for good times and travel. It was this road that, the hookers, ladyboys, thieves, tuk tuk drivers, and all sorts of other crazy bastards took home each night beside me. I walked it everyday to get to Pub Street (the party street for those of you who know it).

I was teaching for a training center in China. All of the Chinese employees were rather quiet, reserved and, for the most part, didn’t speak much unless spoken to first. The fellow foreigners on the other hand, were a group of raucous bastards ready to drop anchor and smash beers and get wild at a moments notice.

The Naked Man and The Mob (Colombia)

I remember smashing whisky cokes at the bar in Houston airport so that I would be drunk enough to sleep on the plane down to South America. When I arrived in Bogata, I booked a hostel on my phone because I had an eighteen hour layover before my next flight to Pasto. It was 1 a.m. when the Taxi driver took me down a handful of desolate alleyways between graffiti painted brick walls before we arrived at the place.

The taxi driver from the airport seemed fairly normal when he picked me up. A little casual conversation and the general introductory questions. As soon as we arrived near my hotel though the ol’ munchkin quickly mutated into a freakish troll.
